Stefano Bedetti playing the tenor saxophone
Biography

Stefano
Bedetti

Saxophonist · Composer

Self-taught, he began playing the saxophone at the age of 14. At 19 he was already on the international scene thanks to Giulio Capiozzo, drummer of the legendary band Area, who brought him into the group. That same year he took part in the recording of Chernobyl 7991, one of Area’s best-loved albums.

At the same time he began one of his most important live collaborations, with Jestofunk, recording three of the band’s best-known albums. The collaboration lasted almost a decade and took him to the most important jazz stages and festivals in the world.

In 2004 he became the saxophonist of the Marco Tamburini International Quintet, featuring Billy Hart on drums and Cameron Brown on bass. With this group he recorded two albums, Frenico and Isole.

In 2005 he won the Porsche Giovani & Jazz competition for new talent, organised by Veneto Jazz, with his quartet, and that same year he performed at the Cuban festival Havana Jazz Plaza at the invitation of Chucho Valdés.

In 2007 he released his debut album as a leader, The Bright Side of the Moon, which was warmly received by musicians and critics (with notable reviews in Musica Jazz and Jazz It) and was nominated for “Best Jazz Album 2007” at the Italian Jazz Awards. The album also features liner notes by Fabrizio Bosso, who names Stefano as one of the most interesting saxophonists of recent years.

In 2009 he moved to New York, where he became a regular member of Billy Hart’s quartet and formed his own trio, with Victor Lewis on drums and Ed Howard on bass, performing from New York to Los Angeles.

In 2022 he released Chinese Sundays on Encore Music with the Stefano Bedetti Organ Trio, followed in 2025 by Fragile with the Stefano Bedetti Quartet.
